Unicorn Fairy

Another of Tams workshops is the awesome M3-Magical Mythical Makings,  a 5 week course offering some Amazing tutorials. Wk 5 is about Fairies and Unicorns...something I really love!!!!!
So here is my effort, I stayed with graphite pencils as I really liked the look, but I think I will do another and colour it later.

Fab Faces

I joined a few of Tam's workshops over at Willowing & Friends and have been skipping between classes to do lots of different tutorials
One of her workshop groups is Fabulous Faces, which offers 6 weeks of tutorials that help you to draw some pretty amazing faces. Tam breaks everything down and her tutorials are very easy to follow...even if you have never drawn before.
So anyway, I just started wk 1, and the first tutorial is focused on producing a front facing portrait, using graphite pencils, so following her tutorial, here is how mine turned out...

I am pretty happy with hoe she turned out, what do you think?

markers

so, I am slowly but surely building up my art supply stash and decided that I have to start thinking of a nice way to store my markers in a way that they are close by and I do not have to unpack a whole bunch of things to get to them.
I have to admit that after sorting them out I have alot less than I thought I had lol or atleast it looks that way anyhow :)
I started with my new Kaisercraft Infusions alcohol markers...a little while ago I saw someone using and old CD holder to store them...Perfect, I had just the right one stashed away filled with cds I dont even listen to anymore. Then I dug out an assortment of artline markers, sharpies, slick sticks, Pitt pens and put them into some stationery holders that I picked up at Kmart for about $3 each.

Still have a long way to go to have a collection like everyone else, but have to start somewhere lol. Now to sort out my paints, pencils, etc.

The Rainbow Mermaid

I have joined some online art journal courses at Willowing Arts
and Tam is currently offering an amazing tutorial called The Rainbow Mermaid, you can access the class by making a donation to Water Charity. For more information click HERE

Tam is fantastic at breaking down how to do everything and even if you feel that you can not draw, she will show you step by step how to create your very own mermaid.
So, without further ado, I have completed my take:
I have used watercolour paints and dylusion sprays to create her.
So why not have a go at painting your mermaid and help a worthy cause at the same time.
Thanks Tam, I really enjoyed this tutorial,

Lions and Tigers and Bears Oh My.......

.....Well Tiger anyway lol.
I was asked if I would draw a Tiger for someone, the other day, and I have never even attempted to do so before, so thought it may be a good challenge. I did warn though, that I may not do a great job on it, but was willing to try :)
So after looking around for a little inspiration, I jumped in with pencils sharpened!
I was a little unsure with my end product, as I can be my own worst enemy, even at the best of times! That's when I knew it was time to put the pencil down lol.

Horse

I have been playing around with compressed charcoal pencils and had a go at drawing a horse head. I used to love to sit for hours and hours drawing horses, but time does not allow me to do so anymore!
I absolutely love working in black and white, and overall I was quite happy with my end result.

Postcard swap

My niece Lisa Lee, signed me up for  iHanna's postcard swap
so we had to make 10 postcards, any way, any how, after thinking for a bit, I decided that I would
just hand draw mine, a little boring to some maybe with all the wonderful mixed media out there :)
I mentioned in a previous post that I had not drawn in a long time, so I thought this would be a great
opportunity to get some practice in!
I decided to do a fairy theme, I mean who doesn't like fairies, right? lol and then to finish them off I
added a fairy quote to each of them.
I got my 10 addresses a couple days ago, and I have 9 addresses in the USA and 1 in The Netherlands.
I am still finishing up a few bits on the last couple so I decided that I would send 5 today and will send the next 5 on monday.
Here are the first five that are already on their way to their recipients...who will they be???
I will be back to share the other 5 as soon as I have finished them.
* EEk sorry, I forgot to take a photo of the last 5 before sending...Sorry!

Meanwhile, why not pop on over HERE to see what everyone else has made in this swap...

Elsa

Ok, so I have been really out of touch with drawing for quite some time...i just never felt I had the time or patience anymore...well now its time to make time! and like anything, baby steps first right?
I decided animation is a great place to start so here is my first attempt at Elsa from Frozen,
I know my drawings will improve alot with practice so they can only get better.
I just used simple coloured pencils for this next time i think I will use watercolour.
I did rush the bottom of the pic as I wanted to concentrate on her face

Art Journal

I have decided it is time to start an art journal!
I used to love drawing and have not been very creative lately , so I decided that this
would be a perfect way to get the creative juices flowing again
....although I am very rusty!

I am a big fan of fairytales and anything magical, so I decided
that would be a good place to start!
I have dedicated this page to one of my favourite
fairy quotes....

and because I have always loved horses I obviously would have to
love Unicorns!
When I was little my mum and dad always played a song
by the Irish Rovers called "The Unicorn" it was written by a
poet by the name of Shel Silverstein
I loved that song (still do actually) and love the story it tells.
So here is my Unicorn page

I know its hard to read the writing, but it is the song lyrics for the unorn song I was
talking about.

Easter bag

Another supercute pattern from Tone Finnangers collection, this little easter bag will be perfect for my daughter this easter....sshhhh dont tell lol.

Drawstring bag

I found the pattern for this bag in Janelle Wind's book "Pieces of Me". I hand appliqued the design using scraps of fabric from my stash.

Tilda

Lisa Lee from Sprouting creative wings got me into Tone Finnanger some time ago and I have made a few dolls and other items from her books, this one is the pixie doll and here is her Reindeer friend

and also some cute little birds from the same book

cards

Just thought I'd share some of the cards that I have made...

Art doll

Here is a doll that I made for a lady in South Australia for an Art Doll swap...

another attempt at Juniper

This time I used 2 of the Juniper plants and wired them to look like 5 seperate trees, kind of a mini forrest effect...not sure if I quite achieved anything like that lol, but I liked how it turned out and who know in a few years it might look great.
I also had a go at another single Juniper tree for my niece for her birthday, I did break a large branch so this one eneded up smaller that I had hoped but she like it anyway, I foind a cute little fisherman to complete the scene

First attempts at wiring Juniper

I brought a few juniper plants so that I could have a go at wiring them to create the shape I wanted and
hopefully create something that looks more like a tree. They pretty much all looked similar to the one in the pic above at the beginning.
After a little thought and lots of pruning top and bottom, and jumping in the deep end and just having a go at wiriring, even though it looks a little messy I was quite happy with my end result.
I chose a small round bonsai dish and added more gravel in blue and brown, hoping for a water scene and the perfect rock to top it off, I found some more moss to balance out the look too.

Fairy Lantern

I picked up this lantern, empty, from Kmart for the bargain price of $3 and I thought hmmm
maybe I could make a mini fairy garden here...so I brought some little indoor plants and soil,
added a fairy and viola, instant little fairy garden, it took all of 5 mins to create.
The door can be open or closed with a latch.

Bonsai

In my last post I mentioned that I had been raiding the discount isle of my local nursery
I found a small Boxus that needed a little attention so after a good trim and some TLC I planted
it into a bonsai pot with good quality bonsai potting mix and some rocks and gravel to give the appearance of a water scene, added some moss for grass and a lizard and bird figurine.
All in all I am pretty happy with how it turned out :)

The Forever Tree

Ok, so I have been playing with the idea of bonsiing my own plants, I picked up a few bargains in the discounted plant section to have a go. I can't remember what this plant is called but I trimmed it right back and tried shaping a little, added some moss and stones/gravel, small plants and a mini resin gazebo that I picked up online, oh and a cute little leggo tyre to make a swing for my tree.
My 5 year old son absolutely loves this one and he immediately named it "the Forever Tree"

mini succulent garden

I have really liked little mini cactus and other small succulents for a while but wasn't sure where I would plant them. After finding lots of inspiriation on the internet I decided that I should have a go. I brought a small selection of succulents at bunnings and a 25 cm terracotta pot.
I decided on the design that I wanted, then I thought I would just jump in and have a go!
This is what I ended up with....

I covered the terrapotta pot with a teatowel and tapped lightly where I thought I would want the
break to be and luckily for me it just worked out pretty much how I wanted it to...
as you can see I used the left over pieces to create levels in the pot.
After adding the plants I decided it needed something extra, a horse or a tiny farm house or something.
My daughter quickly offered me a leggo horse and he fit in fantastically. Thanks Brieana!

After looking at it for a short while i decided it still needed something...hmmm
why not add a bottom layer by filling the larger drainage tray, I think I made the right choice
as it seems to finish it all off nicely...

I remembered that I had a little add on leggo pack stashed away, with this little
guy with his little barrow and pick and shovel...maybe he is out
prospecting for gold or something, or just collecting rocks for his garden, either way,
I think he fit in nicely.
I really enjoyed putting this together and can see myself making a few more really soon.
Watch out kids, you better hide your leggo :o)

My First Fairy Garden

I have always admired people's fairy garden's, but being born with a brown thumb,
I never knew quite where to start!
My front and back yards pretty much a blank canvas, there was just lots
dirty grey sand and not an ounce of green...well apart from a tree or two.
I did try planting some plants with absolutely no knowledge of what I was
doing, and being a bit of a water miser at the time, not many things actually grew.
Ofcourse (at the time) I gave up and decided that gardening just wasn't for me!

I did learn a little and created a little garden in my front about a year ago and
it is still doing quite well...touch wood! It inspired me to plant a few more things
here and there...so far, so good.

So anyway, I started thinking about Fairy gardens again and I looked around
on Pinterest for some inspiration. Then I looked at my tree in a whole new light...
I started by trimming the branches and grabbed some old bricks we had laying around
and started to build a little framing wall. Then off to Bunnings to get some good soil
and look at some plants. I got really excited and just brought lots of small cheap plants
to start me off. Then I checked our local shops and found some cute little fairies
that were also quite cheap. Also just around the home I found some bits and pieces
that I could also add for that fairy touch.

Finally, I made my very first Fairy Garden and was really happy with the result.
I think I am hooked, hubby even said he can see it growing from there, lol, knows
me too well....
So without further ado, I present "The Blomshus Patch" named by my
9 year old daughter!

I just need to find the right Fairy house to fit inside the gap in the tree,
maybe I will visit a fish store to see if an aquarium castle will do.

There were some broken up bits of a cement slab laying around that I decided
might work as steps, and they fit quite neatly in between the roots at the
base of the tree.
The solar powered butterflies flutter around all day adding life to the garden too.
